Gone are the days when the only sound you could get from your computer was a beep produced by the internal speaker. Today, sound cards are available which free the CPU of producing sound so that it can look after other applications. Sound cards have a chip designed to convert digital signals into analogue signals which are then piped to the computer speakers or headphones. Of the various types of sound cards available is the internal sound card.
The internal sound card fits inside the CPU on a given slot on the motherboard. That is why it is known as internal sound card. It is one of the most popular sound cards available but it is seen that it is receiving tough competition from its external counterpart. The internal sound cards directly plug into the given slot on the motherboard but and as a result are a little distance from the main motherboard circuitry. Due to this, the internal sound cards tend to feature higher signal to noise ratios than their integrated counterparts. To correct this problem, the manufacturers have started to design new internal sound cards that include dedicated shielding, which helps reduce the interference generated by the motherboard. Compared to the external sound cards, the internal sound cards are cheap. The other problem faced with an internal sound card is the portability. As it fits directly onto the motherboard, it cannot be removed regularly to fit on other systems such as laptops.
